Vienna Zoo

Vienna's zoo is officially called Schönbrunn Zoo. It is located in the gardens of the imposing Schönbrunn Palace, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At the zoo, you can see more than 700 animal species from all over the world. Covering more than five hectares, the zoo is like a green oasis in the city. Take guided tours of the varied animals and ecosystems. For children, there is a children's garden and several playgrounds.

The world's oldest zoo

Tiergarten Schönbrunn is the world's oldest zoo. Founded in 1752, the zoo has moved with the times and has been furnished to modern animal welfare standards. The first animals were brought in by order of Emperor Franz I Stefan. The zoo was open only to guests of the imperial family until 1778.

The management participates in various research programmes through which they aim to make the animals' habitat even better. They also do their best to protect endangered species by breeding them in captivity and releasing them back into the wild whenever possible.

Where is Tiergarten Vienna located?

The Tiergarten Vienna is near Schloss Schönbrunn, a stately imperial palace with extensive gardens. The Tiergarten and palace are located in the west of the city in the Hietzing district at Maxingstraße 13b. You can easily reach the zoo with public transport and a short walk.

Facilities at the Vienna Zoo

Between the zoo's many animal enclosures, are a number of restaurants and cafés where you can take a break. Have a coffee or enjoy lunch with exotic animal sounds playing in the background. In the gift shop, you can buy a souvenir or present for home. A petting zoo has been set up for children, where they can cuddle child-friendly animals. Several playgrounds have also been created, including the water playground, the forest playground and a nature experience trail.

Children up to six years old are welcome for free and students and senior citizens can profit from discounts. You can also find the programme and current exhibitions on the website. You can book (special) tours, such as a morning visit to the zoo before the gates open to the other visitors.
